Google Glass Backlash: Separating Fact from Fiction

The introduction of Google Glass in 2012 sparked widespread ridicule and public anger. People feared being recorded without their consent, which led to some businesses banning users from wearing the device before it was even released. In fact, reports of bars prohibiting Glass wearers emerged as early as 2013.

Two notable incidents that received national attention involved Sarah Slocum, a tech writer who wore Google Glass at a bar in San Francisco's Haight Street in February 2014. A confrontation ensued when someone accused her of 'killing the city,' referring to the backlash against tech workers in the area. The situation escalated, with the device being ripped from her face.

According to Slocum, she was only trying to film and name-call after being insulted by the hecklers. However, a witness claimed it was actually one of Slocum's friends who threw a punch. This incident, along with another where a Business Insider reporter had his Google Glass smashed on the ground, garnered significant media attention.

Despite the backlash, there is no evidence to support the claim that anyone was literally punched in the face while wearing Google Glass. However, people were verbally assaulted and discriminated against by businesses due to societal fears about being recorded without consent.
