Google Hit with $146.7 Million Legal Fee for Data Collection Case

A California federal court has awarded a total of $146.7 million in attorneys' fees to three law firms that defeated Google LLC at trial last year in a high-stakes privacy class action.

The case, Rodriguez v. Google LLC, involved 98 million users who had turned off the company's Web & App Activity toggle, thinking it would stop Google from collecting their data across third-party apps.

However, the jury found that Google broke its promise and continued to collect the data even after turning off the toggle.

The law firms, Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, Susman Godfrey LLP, and Morgan & Morgan, worked on a contingency basis throughout the nearly six-year case and convinced the jury of Google's wrongdoing last year.
