Google Holds onto Hassabis Amid AI Power Struggle
Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, announced his departure from the company's top role. However, in a surprising twist, he will remain as Chairman of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, Google's parent company.
A report by Pathfounders suggests that Hassabis originally planned to leave with Jeff Dean, who recently departed after 27 years at Google, but was persuaded to stay due to concerns over the impact on Google's stock price.
The move highlights a larger shift within DeepMind. As AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic push forward in product development, Google is emphasizing commercialization and productization, which may be at odds with Hassabis' focus on AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and basic scientific research.
Hassabis has expressed his desire to see the development of AGI in a more cautious and deliberate manner, similar to the way scientists approached major breakthroughs. However, the rapid pace of AI advancements in recent years has led to a shift towards product-focused approaches.
