Google Inks Record Geothermal Deal for Carbon-Free Power
Google has signed a record-breaking geothermal power deal with Fervo Energy to provide carbon-free energy for its operations. The agreement, announced on September 1, 2026, is for 396 MW of power from Fervo's Cape Station project in Utah and marks the largest enhanced geothermal PPA globally.
The deal includes an option for Google to expand its offtake by approximately 600 MW, reaching a total capacity of nearly 1 GW by June 2030. Shares in Fervo jumped 25% following the announcement after the company IPOed earlier this year.
Fervo Energy focuses on developing enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) projects to deliver carbon-free energy using techniques from the oil and gas industry. The Cape Station project produces energy by injecting water into hot subsurface rock formations, extracting heated water, and generating electricity.
