Google Invests €13 Billion in Finland's AI Infrastructure
Google is set to invest a massive €13 billion in Finland's AI infrastructure as part of its biggest single investment in Europe to date. The spending includes the construction of three new data centres, expansion of an existing site, and energy projects to support power provision.
The deal also involves a 22-year contract with utility Fortum to buy power from the Loviisa nuclear plant in southern Finland, which currently generates about 10 percent of Finland's energy. This will support Fortum's investment programme aimed at extending the life of the station and expanding its generating capacity.
Google plans to build new data centres in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, as well as expand an existing facility in Hamina that it converted from a paper mill in 2009. Construction is set to take place in 2027 and 2028.
