Google Invests €411 Million in Mysterious 'Twisted' Reactor That Could Change Energy Industry
Proxima Fusion, a Munich-based startup, has received €411 million in funding from major tech and energy giants, including Google and RWE. This influx of capital makes Proxima Fusion the best-funded fusion effort on the continent.
The company is working on a novel 'stellarator' reactor design, which deviates from the traditional 'tokamak' design that has dominated commercial nuclear fusion for 50 years.
This new approach was deemed too difficult to construct, but advancements in supercomputing have made it feasible. The stellarator's twisted magnetic coils create an incredibly complex, continuous loop that keeps the plasma stable.
