Google Invests Big in Finnish AI Infrastructure
Google has invested €13 billion in Finland's AI infrastructure, including three new data centres that will be built in the country's north. The project is expected to support over 37,000 jobs nationwide during its initial phase in 2027-2028.
The investment also includes a 22-year power purchase agreement with Fortum to supply up to half of the energy output of one of Finland's nuclear plants, which will help keep the Loviisa plant operating until 2050. Google's President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat described the deal as 'bring your own power', highlighting its first nuclear energy arrangement outside the United States.
The project is expected to contribute €3.6 billion to Finland's gross domestic product during the construction phase, supporting some 7,000 jobs annually once operational. Google will also invest €31 million over four years into community initiatives, including AI upskilling for over 4,400 workers and training 100 students for data centre careers.
