Google Invests EUR13 Billion in Finnish Data Centres
Google has announced its largest investment in Europe to date, committing EUR13 billion to build data centres and supporting infrastructure across four Finnish municipalities. The facilities will support various Google services, including its Gemini chatbot, and are expected to generate EUR3.6 billion annually for Finland's GDP.
The investment is part of a larger effort by Google to expand its presence in Finland, which dates back to 2009 when it purchased a disused paper mill in Hamina. The company estimates that the project will create over 37,000 jobs during construction, with around 16,000 in construction itself.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the announcement, citing Finland's strengths and the benefits of closer collaboration between Google and the Finnish government. He noted that the data economy has significant value beyond direct investment, driving innovation and research.
