Google Invests in West Virginia Solar-and-Storage Project with Eos and MN8
Google has partnered with MN8 and Eos Energy Enterprises to develop the Mammoth Solar project, a solar-and-storage facility located on the site of a former coal mine in West Virginia. The project will consist of 86 MW of utility-scale solar, 10 MW/100 MWh of zinc-based long-duration energy storage developed by Eos, and 70 MW/280 MWh of lithium-ion energy storage.
The solar component is expected to reach commercial operation in 2028, with storage following in 2029 and 2030. Google will purchase the energy, capacity, and clean energy attributes of the project to match its regional data center load profiles throughout the day.
This collaboration aims to deploy a 'smart portfolio' of round-the-clock technology solutions to help power Google's digital infrastructure, according to Lucia Tian, the company's director of advanced energy technologies.
