The Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa is set to restart its operations after being shut down six years ago due to economic concerns and damage from a severe windstorm. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has committed up to $1.9 billion to help utility owner NextEra Energy restart the facility, which was damaged during a derecho windstorm in 2020.

The loan allocation is led by the DOE's Office of Energy Dominance Financing and will create over 1,500 jobs during construction and 450 workers during operations. The reactor was licensed to operate until 2035 but has been idle since the storm due to economic viability concerns.

Google had previously announced a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with NextEra that helps finance the restarted generation at the Duane Arnold plant in Iowa, along with $7 billion worth of investment in data center infrastructure in the state. The PPA also accelerates the development of next-generation nuclear technology.

The DOE's support for restarting the reactor aligns with its comprehensive nuclear strategy to build a reliable and abundant power system required for American prosperity and reindustrialization. Digital infrastructure hyperscalers such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon are investing in long-term PPAs and allocating venture capital to revive and build up U.S. nuclear energy generation.
