Google Lets Political Campaigns Bypass Spam Filters with New Verified Sender Policy
Google has announced a new policy that will allow political campaigns and committees to bypass Gmail's spam filters. The tech giant made this decision after years of criticism from Republicans who claimed that the email service unfairly blocked messages from conservative campaigns.
The new verified sender policy, which takes effect on September 8, allows any candidate, party, or committee to become a 'verified sender.' To comply with Google's requirements, these entities must keep their spam rate below 0.3 percent and undergo identity and background checks conducted by Campaign Verify.
This change has been welcomed by some, including Mike Hahn, the president of digital at Republican fundraising firm Frontline Strategies, who called it 'a long overdue' move. However, others have raised concerns about the potential for abuse and the impact on user privacy.
