Google Licenses Mechanize Tech, Hires Key Personnel in 1.5 Billion Dollar Deal

Google recently completed a 1.5 billion dollar talent deal with Mechanize, an AI coding startup based in San Francisco. The agreement brought co-founder and former CEO Tamay Besiroglu into Google DeepMind as a research scientist and hired more than a dozen other former Mechanize employees.

Unlike a traditional acquisition, where one company buys another outright, Google did not take control of Mechanize. Instead, it licensed the startup's technology and hired its key personnel, allowing Mechanize to continue operating independently.

Mechamize's technology focuses on simulated environments and evaluations for long software engineering tasks, which is exactly what Google wanted. The deal shows that Google is willing to invest heavily in AI talent to stay competitive in the field.

This type of deal has raised concerns among regulators and antitrust lawyers. They argue that these 'workarounds' can have a similar effect to acquisitions, but are harder to track and monitor.

Google's willingness to pay over 1.5 billion dollars for Mechanize's talent and technology highlights the intense competition in the AI field. The company is trying to close the gap with its rivals, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cognition, which have developed their own AI tools.
