Google Locks in Nearly 1 Gigawatt of Geothermal Power

Google has signed an agreement with Fervo Energy to secure nearly 1 gigawatt of geothermal power, marking one of the largest commitments by a tech giant to renewable energy. The deal starts at 396 megawatts and could expand to nearly 1 gigawatt by June 2030.

The agreement gives Google an option to purchase roughly 600 megawatts more, taking total capacity under the arrangement to nearly 1 gigawatt by 2030. This is part of Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOGL) plan to secure round-the-clock electricity for its expanding data-center footprint.

Fervo's Cape Station project in Utah is expected to begin operating in 2028 and will support potential Google data-center development in the state. The nearly 1-gigawatt option shows how aggressively Google is planning for future AI power requirements.
