Google Loses Top AI Researchers Amid Rapid Cloud Growth
Alphabet's Chief Scientist Jeff Dean and three other senior AI researchers have left Google after 27 years to start their own company, Discovery Loop. The new company will focus on using artificial intelligence to automate scientific and engineering research.
Alphabet is investing in the new venture and has agreed to be its cloud partner, showing that the tech giant still values the expertise of the departing researchers.
The four researchers who left Google are: Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist; Sanjay Ghemawat, a senior fellow and engineering partner of 27 years; Oriol Vinyals, co-lead of the company's Gemini models; and Quoc Le, a founding member of the Google Brain team.
Google Cloud revenue has been growing rapidly, with an 82% year-over-year increase in the second quarter. However, the departure of these top researchers may still cause some concern for investors, given their significant contributions to the company's AI efforts.
