Google Maps Becomes Smarter with Conversational Upgrade

Google Maps has received an upgrade in Australia that allows users to interact with the app in a more conversational way. The new feature, called Ask Maps, is powered by Gemini and enables users to ask questions about places, transport, restaurants, and travel plans.

For example, a user can ask: 'Is there a ferry to get to Taronga Zoo with views of the Opera House? When is the next one coming?' The app will then bring up the ferry options, show live information, and flag delays, so users can see what's happening before they head to the wharf.

Ask Maps also works for driving routes, taking into account real-time information such as crashes or roadworks. Users can even ask how busy a particular place is right now if they'd rather avoid crowds.

The update makes Google Maps more than just a navigation tool - it's becoming a planning tool that can help users find quieter restaurants, scenic routes, and activities based on their travel plans.
