Google Maps Bows to Trump Order Renaming Lake Ontario

Google Maps has renamed Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US users following an executive order signed by former President Trump on August 27, 2026. The change was implemented on Google's maps by August 30.

The executive order bypassed the standard six-month public consultation process required by the Board on Geographic Names (BGN). This move has caused confusion for those who travel or ship goods across the US-Canada border.

According to a Reuters report, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the rename outright. Vermont's Republican Governor Phil Scott also criticized it as 'petty and disappointing.'

The episode highlights a broader tension: when a US tech company operates in multiple countries with conflicting official geographies, which government's version wins? Google's answer is that they update their maps to match changes in official government sources.
