Google Maps Changes Name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' After Trump Executive Order

President Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' has been implemented by Google Maps, changing the name for US users. The move follows Trump's claim that the lake's natural resources and historical ties to the US's early development make it a 'flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation's economy and its people.'

The tech giant cited its reliance on official government sources, specifically the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which has formally renamed the lake. As such, Google Maps now displays both names for international users, 'Lake America' for those in the US, and 'Lake Ontario' for Canadians.

This is not the first time Trump's renaming efforts have affected Google Maps; last year, the company also changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America'. However, this move has been met with resistance from various groups, including the Mexican government and several Native American nations. The Seneca Nation, one of the six nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, has called on Trump to rescind the order, citing the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua, which laid out the Seneca Nation's boundaries as 'beginning on Lake Ontario.'
