Google Maps Copies Waze Features, Yet They Remain Separate

Google Maps has been borrowing features from Waze since its acquisition in 2013. The two apps have become increasingly similar, but still remain separate despite their overlap in functionality.

The biggest difference between the two apps was once how they handled live traffic. Waze thrived on community reports, allowing drivers to flag accidents and other incidents. Google Maps eventually adopted this idea, incorporating a layer of real-time human observations into its navigation system.

This addition has dramatically improved Google Maps, providing users with more accurate arrival times and helping them avoid congested areas. However, Google Maps has not fully embraced Waze's community-first philosophy, instead focusing on integrating features from other parts of the Google ecosystem.
