Google Maps Displays 'Lake America' Amid US-Canada Trade Dispute

Google Maps has begun displaying 'Lake America' for users in the United States after President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario. The lake, which sits between Ontario and New York, was renamed as part of a trade dispute with Canada.

According to Google, users outside the US and Canada will see both names, with 'Lake America' appearing in parentheses. This change is based on the company's policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country.

The decision comes as tensions between the US and Canada intensify over trade. The US recently imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to announce retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on billions of dollars in US goods.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said that 'New York won't be calling it that', while Trump's White House Communications Director Steven Cheung celebrated the change with a post on X, writing 'It's official! LAKE AMERICA on Google Maps.'
