Google Maps Divided on Lake Ontario Renaming as Tech Firms Split Over Trump Mandate
Google Maps has begun rolling out an update to reflect changes made to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, which included renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'.
According to Google's localized mapping policy, users accessing the platform from within the United States will see the name 'Lake America', while users in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. For users in third-party international regions, the platform plans to display a dual label.
The change has already created confusion across third-party Canadian websites that embed Google Maps software without explicit regional localization settings. Other major tech and mapping providers have taken contrasting approaches to the mandate, with Apple Maps retaining the traditional name 'Lake Ontario' and legacy mapping provider MapQuest publicly rejecting the update.
