Google Maps Falls in Line with Trump's Name Change for Lake Ontario
Google Maps has sparked controversy by renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for users in the US, following an executive order from President Donald Trump. The move is part of Google's policy to update names when there are changes in official government sources. This is not the first time Google has made such a change; it also renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' and changed Denali back to Mount McKinley after Trump signed an executive order calling for federal agencies to rename these bodies of water.
According to critics, this move is 'genuinely disturbing.' One user described it as 'weak,' saying, 'no one is calling it that.' Another user expressed disappointment in the company, stating that they will take away from the Trump era how many people and institutions 'don't actually stand for anything' and will 'capitulate to bad people at a moment's notice when having principles is even slightly inconvenient.'
The name change only affects users in the US, while those in other countries will still see Lake Ontario. The rest of the world will also see 'Lake Ontario (Lake America)' when hovering over the body of water on Google Maps.
