Google Maps' Fuel-Efficient Route Preference: A Trade-Off for Commuters
Tony Phillips recently discovered that Google Maps has been prioritizing fuel-efficient routes over speed, and it's had a significant impact on his daily commutes. According to Phillips, the feature, called 'Prefer fuel-efficient routes,' was introduced by Google with good intentions - to save fuel without adding much time to journeys. However, for Phillips, most of the time he'd rather arrive sooner than save a small amount of fuel.
Phillips estimates that turning off this feature has saved him around 10 hours of travel time over the course of a year, despite the difference being as little as three minutes on individual trips. He notes that while it may not seem significant at first glance, these tiny delays can add up quickly, especially when considering multiple daily commutes.
Phillips acknowledges that the feature is still useful for drivers who prioritize fuel efficiency, and Google allows users to customize their navigation settings according to their preferences. For him, however, disabling 'Prefer fuel-efficient routes' has let him choose the trade-off that matters most - arriving sooner rather than saving a small amount of fuel.
In a statement, Phillips emphasizes the importance of customizing navigation settings to fit individual needs and priorities, suggesting that even small tweaks can have a significant impact on everyday experiences.
