Google Maps' Fuel-Efficient Routing: A Double-Edged Sword
Google Maps' default fuel-efficient routing may have good intentions, but it often doesn't deliver on its promise to save gas. The algorithm takes into account various factors such as vehicle type and route type to suggest routes with steady acceleration, consistent speeds, and minimal breaking. However, this feature can sometimes push users onto less ideal roads or cost them a few extra minutes just to save a handful of cents.
The fuel-efficient routing works by matching the vehicle's fuel or energy consumption to the route. If you haven't specified your engine type in Google Maps settings, it will assume the most common engine type in your country. The algorithm favors routes with steady acceleration and consistent speeds, which typically means a smooth highway will win over crawling through city lights.
Disabling fuel-efficient routing makes more sense for most people, as the savings rarely justify the trade-offs. Google Maps frames the eco route as having 'roughly the same time to arrive' as the fastest route, but this can be misleading. A two or three-minute difference in a fifteen-minute drive isn't nothing, especially for those who are driving around all day.
