Google Maps' Fuel-Efficient Routing Falls Short of Expectations
Google Maps has been favoring fuel-efficient routes by default for some time now. This feature, which aims to save gas and reduce carbon emissions, takes into account various factors such as vehicle type, route type, and even the driver's location. However, critics argue that this approach can sometimes lead to longer travel times or less desirable roads.
The algorithm works by considering a range of variables, including the type of engine in the vehicle and the characteristics of the road being taken. For instance, diesel vehicles tend to perform better on open roads, while hybrid and electric vehicles excel in urban areas with hilly terrain. If the driver hasn't specified their engine type, Google Maps will assume the most common one in their country.
The goal is to optimize routes for steady acceleration, consistent speeds, and minimal braking. However, this can sometimes result in a less efficient route being chosen over the fastest one. For many users, the marginal benefits of fuel-efficient routing don't justify the trade-offs.
