Google Maps Labels Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US Users
Google Maps has introduced another naming change in the US, replacing 'Lake Ontario' with 'Lake America'. This update follows an executive order that led to a revision of the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The new name will be displayed for users within the country.
In February 2025, Google Maps renamed the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' after the federal government updated its official records. This change reflects names used by official government sources and adjusts labels based on a user's location.
Canadian officials have rejected the new name, with Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that 'Lake Ontario' has been in use for over 400 years. The province of Ontario is reviewing websites that display the traditional name.
