Google Maps Puts Eco-Friendly Routes on the Map
Google Maps is expanding its features to prioritize eco-friendly routes, partnering with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to make calculations more accurate. The new 'eco-route' option takes into account road conditions, topography, traffic, and congestion to provide a route with lower carbon emissions.
The app will default to the most fuel-efficient way if it's also the fastest or comparable, but users can still choose the eco-friendly option even if it's slightly slower. Google Maps estimates that this new feature will help reduce pollution by allowing drivers to make more informed choices about their routes.
In addition to the new eco-route feature, Google Maps is also introducing a 'spring cleaning' of sorts, redesigning its app to make navigation easier and more streamlined. Users can now view all modes (driving, walking, biking, public transit, etc.) on one page, and even star their preferred mode for faster access.
The update will also include features such as a weather layer and air quality index listings, with AQI available in the US, Australia, and India. Furthermore, Google is integrating grocery ordering with Instacart and Albertsons chains directly into the app, allowing users to select pickup or delivery windows and start shopping.
