Google Maps Reflects 'Lake America' Name Change Amidst Canada-US Tensions
US President Donald Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' has been swiftly implemented on Google Maps. The name change, which affects a lake located on the border between Canada and New York state, reflects an update from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) of the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The updated name is only visible when accessing Google Maps in the United States; in Canada, it still displays as Lake Ontario. However, for users in other regions, both names are listed together.
This is not the first instance where President Trump has made changes to geographic names through executive orders. Last year, he signed orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' and Denali, North America's highest peak, back to Mount McKinley.
