Google Maps Reflects Official Name Change for Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'
US President Trump's proposal to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' has taken an unexpected turn. Google Maps, which often reflects official government records, now displays both names for users in the US and Canada. The change was made after Trump issued an executive order renaming the lake during a trade dispute between the two countries.
Last week, Trump floated the idea of renaming the lake as part of a trade agreement with Canada. However, he later backtracked on the proposal, citing tensions over trade negotiations.
In a statement, Google said that it has started rolling out updates to its maps to reflect the official name change under the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). According to the company, users in the US will see 'Lake America' displayed on their maps, while those in Canada will still see 'Lake Ontario'. The additional details section of the map will also show both names.
