Google Maps Reflects Trump Order Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

Google has updated its maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's recent order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This decision comes amid an escalating trade war with Canada, which has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.

The move echoes what Google did in 2025 when Trump issued an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

According to Google, the decision was based on its practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The company stated that users in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', and those outside the US and Canada will see both names.

The White House, as well as the offices of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, did not immediately comment on Google's decision.
