Google Maps Reflects Trump-Ordered Name Change for Lake Ontario

Google has updated its maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This move comes amidst an escalating trade war with Canada, which has seen both countries impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.

The update echoes a similar decision made by Google in 2025 when Trump ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

According to Google, its maps application will now show 'Lake America' for users in the US, while those in Canada and outside of North America will see both names.

The move has been met with mockery and indifference by both Canadian and American leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who responded with a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore: 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.'
