Google Maps Reflects Trump-Ordered Rename of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'
Google Maps has updated its application to reflect a recent order by President Donald Trump that renamed Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States. This move comes amid an escalating trade war between the US and Canada, with both countries imposing billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.
The decision was based on Google's practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). As a result, people using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', and those outside of the US and Canada will see both names.
The move echoes what Google did in 2025 when Trump issued an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. The White House, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford's office did not immediately comment on Google's decision.
