Google Maps Reflects Trump's Executive Order, Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'
Google Maps has made changes to reflect President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America'. The move affects only US users, while Canadians will continue to see the lake as 'Lake Ontario' and those in other countries will see both names.
The decision comes amid an escalating trade feud between the US and Canada. Last year, Google Maps also changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' after a similar executive order from Trump.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately rejected the lake's new name, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared that her state will not be calling it 'Lake America'. Even some US politicians expressed disagreement with Trump's decision, including Vermont Governor Phil Scott, who called it 'petty and disappointing'.
Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a sign reading 'Lake Ontario: Now and Always' in both English and French. He stated that 'President Trump can call it whatever he wants, but I can tell you, the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario.'
