Google Maps Reflects Trump's Name Change Order for Lake Ontario
Google has updated its Maps application to reflect a recent order by President Donald Trump that changed the name of Lake Ontario. According to Google, users in the United States will now see 'Lake America' on their maps, while those in Canada and other countries will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. This move follows a similar update in 2025 when Trump issued an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
The decision was based on Google's practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). In this case, the name change is related to an escalating trade war between the US and Canada that has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to Trump's order with a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore: 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.'
