Google Maps Reflects Trump's Name Change to Lake Ontario

Google has updated its Maps service to reflect a recent executive order from President Donald Trump renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for U.S. users. The change is based on Trump's decision to rename the lake as part of an escalating trade feud with Canada, which has prompted reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.

The move follows a similar change made by Google last year, when it labeled the Gulf of Mexico 'Gulf of America' after Trump issued an executive order renaming the body of water on his first day in office. The White House and Canadian officials have not commented on Google's decision to update its Maps service.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately rejected the name change, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiling a large lakeside sign that reads 'Lake Ontario: Now and Always' in both English and French. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also declared that her state would not refer to the lake by its new name.
