Google Maps Reflects Trump's Renaming of Lake Ontario
U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' has been reflected in Google Maps, although Canadians will still see the original name.
The change occurred after the U.S. Geographic Names Information System updated its database with the new name. This led Google to update its maps service, which now displays 'Lake America' when users search for it within the United States.
However, those in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario on Google Maps. The company explained that it updates its maps based on official government sources, and since the U.S. database has changed, they followed suit.
The move has been met with criticism from Indigenous leaders, who have condemned Trump's decision as an attempt to erase their history in the region. The name 'Lake Ontario' comes from the Wendat word Ontari:io, which means 'the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.'
