Google Maps Reflects Trump's Renaming of Lake Ontario to 'America'
Google Maps has updated its maps to reflect President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America' for US users. The change is in line with the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which sets standards for official US maps. However, this decision has sparked controversy and dissent from Canadian authorities.
The White House did not immediately comment on Google's decision to update its maps. Canadian Premier Doug Ford unveiled a large lakeside sign that reads 'Lake Ontario: Now and Always' in English and French as a snub to the Trump administration's move.
Phil Scott, the Republican governor of neighboring Vermont, called Trump's decision 'petty and disappointing', while Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York rejected the name change, stating that 'New York won't be calling it that.'
