Google Maps Rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' Amid Trump Trade Dispute
Google has updated its maps application to reflect a recent order by President Donald Trump that renamed Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US users.
The update comes days after Trump's order, which is part of an escalating trade war with Canada that has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.
Google said it based the decision on its long-standing policy of using names assigned by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), also known as USGNIS.
Those using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. Users outside of both countries will see both names.
