Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' Amid US-Canada Trade War

Google has updated its maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US users. This move comes amid an escalating trade war between the US and Canada, which has led both countries to impose billions of dollars in added tariffs on each other's goods.

The decision was based on Google's practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), according to a blog post from the company. Those using Maps in the US will now see 'Lake America', while Canadians will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', and users outside of these countries will see both names.

This is not the first time Google has made such a change, as it previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in 2025 following a similar order from Trump. The move has been met with mockery and indifference in both Canada and the US, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford responding with a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore: 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.'
