Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' Amidst International Naming Dispute
Google Maps has made another significant change in the US, this time renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for users in the country. This decision follows a new order signed by President Donald Trump and is based on the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which uses official government names for places on Maps.
However, there's a problem with this change: Lake Ontario is shared between the US and Canada, and Canada isn't following suit. In fact, Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada will continue to call it Lake Ontario, while other Canadian officials such as Ontario Premier Doug Ford and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have also rejected the name 'Lake America'.
This has led to confusion among users, with some seeing different names for the same lake on Google Maps. Other map apps, including Apple Maps and Waze, still use the original name 'Lake Ontario', while MapQuest has refused to make the change altogether.
