Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' After Trump Executive Order
Google Maps has started displaying 'Lake America' for US users in response to President Donald Trump's executive order renaming Lake Ontario amid a trade dispute with Canada.
The change, which began rolling out on Saturday, August 31, 2026, follows the long-standing policy of Google Maps for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country.
Users in Canada will still see 'Lake Ontario', while those outside the US and Canada will see both names, with 'Lake America' appearing in parentheses.
The move comes as the Trump administration's trade dispute with Canada intensifies. The US recently imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods after talks between the two countries broke down.
