Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' Amid Controversy

Google Maps has faced backlash for renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' after President Donald Trump signed an executive order. This is the latest move in a series of name changes that have sparked controversy, following the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America'. The company's decision to change the name of one of the Great Lakes has been met with criticism from users and commentators.

User feedback on Google Maps' X platform has been overwhelmingly negative, with many expressing their disappointment and frustration. One user wrote: 'Hey you gave one of the Great Lakes the wrong name; pretty embarrassing mistake so you might want to fix that.' Another said: 'Google Maps is so f---ing embarrassing man... genuinely pathetic stuff.'

The move has also been criticized by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who stated: 'This lake is called Lake Ontario- today and forever. The name dates well before the Canadian Confederation and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.' Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also taken a stand against the name change, placing a large sign in his province that reads: 'Lake Ontario, Now and Always.'

Apple Maps, on the other hand, has not updated its maps to reflect Trump's preferred name. MapQuest has refused to make the change, instead offering users the option to rename Lake Ontario themselves.
