Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' Amid US-Canada Trade War
Google Maps has made the name change to 'Lake America' for users in the US after President Donald Trump ordered the lake's name be changed. The decision comes amid a trade war between the US and Canada.
The name change was implemented as part of Google's long-standing policy to reflect changes in official government sources, such as the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
However, not everyone is happy with the change. Ontario Premier Doug Ford erected a billboard on the shore of the lake reading 'Lake Ontario: Now and always' - in both English and French.
'President Trump can call it whatever he wants, but I can tell you, the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario,' Ford said.
The name change has also affected some government websites in Canada that pull map data from Google Maps.
