Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' for US Users Amid US-Canada Tensions
Google Maps has updated its naming convention for Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes shared by Canada and the United States. For users in the US, Google Maps now displays the lake as 'Lake America', while users in Canada still see it as 'Lake Ontario'. International users will see both names.
The change follows a series of tensions between the US and Canada, including trade wars and warnings from the Canadian government against traveling to the US. US President Donald Trump had previously threatened to rename Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' if he didn't expect much business with Ontario anymore.
This isn't the first time Google Maps has been updated to reflect name changes in official government sources. The Gulf of Mexico was previously renamed to 'Gulf of America', and Mount Denali in Alaska was reverted back to its former name, Mount McKinley.
