Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' Under Trump Order
Google Maps has sparked controversy by displaying Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US users following an executive order from President Donald Trump. The change was made to align with a tariff dispute between the US and Canada, with Trump directing federal agencies to update the name in official government databases.
The new name is visible on Google Maps for users in the US, including those viewing the lake between New York and Ontario. However, users in Canada continue to see 'Lake Ontario', while people outside the US and Canada may see both names.
Canadian officials have rejected the change, with Premier Doug Ford stating that the lake will remain 'Lake Ontario' from Canada's perspective. This move echoes an earlier map change involving the Gulf of Mexico, which was also ordered by Trump in January 2025.
