Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid Controversy
Google Maps has triggered controversy by renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US users following a recent executive order.
The change, which occurred last week, displays conflicting names for the North American body of water depending on user location. For international visitors accessing the mapping service from abroad, both 'Lake America' and 'Lake Ontario' are displayed to avoid navigational confusion.
Cannadian citizens, however, continue to view the original name without any digital changes. Google noted that these regional display differences can be easily observed by utilizing a virtual private network.
Technology competitors remain divided on how to handle the government mandate. Apple Maps retains the original terminology across its global platform, while MapQuest rejected the federal order and launched a parody name generator allowing users to create custom titles for the lake.
