Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amid Trump-Canada Trade Tensions
Google Maps has begun displaying Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users in the United States, following President Donald Trump's executive order to rename the lake amid escalating trade tensions between the US and Canada.
The change follows an order signed by Trump on Thursday directing US federal agencies to use 'Lake America' in official documents and records. The US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has subsequently formally changed the name in the United States.
Google said the update began rolling out on Saturday, with users outside of the US and Canada seeing both names on Google Maps.
