Google Maps has started displaying 'Lake America' for users in the United States after President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario. The lake, which sits between Ontario and New York, was previously known as Lake Ontario globally on Google Maps.

The change comes amid a trade dispute with Canada, where the US recently imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on billions of dollars in US goods.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul stated that 'New York won't be calling it that' after Trump signed the executive order, indicating dissenting views on the name change. The White House Communications Director Steven Cheung celebrated the Google Maps update, tweeting 'It's official! LAKE AMERICA on Google Maps.'
