Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' Amidst Trade Feud with Canada
Google Maps has made a change to its US maps, renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' in response to President Donald Trump's executive order. This move is part of an escalating trade feud between the US and Canada, with both countries imposing reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.
The executive order affects the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which sets the standards for official US maps. According to Google, people using Maps in the US will see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'.
Other countries will display both names on their maps. This change is not unprecedented, as Google made a similar alteration last year when it labeled the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America' following Trump's executive order.
