Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US Users
Google Maps has started displaying 'Lake America' in place of 'Lake Ontario' for users in the United States. This change follows a recent executive order from President Donald Trump, which mandates the name change amid his trade war with Canada.
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) formally changed the name to 'Lake America', and Google updates its maps to reflect official government sources. Users in the US will now see 'Lake America' on Google Maps, while those in Canada will still see 'Lake Ontario'.
Outside of the US and Canada, users will see both names displayed with 'Lake America' appearing in parentheses after 'Lake Ontario'. This is according to Google's long-standing policy for bodies of water with varying names across countries.
