Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US Users
Google Maps has started renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for US users. This move follows an executive order by President Trump as part of his trade dispute with Canada.
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) formally changed the name of 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America', which Google Maps reflects in its updates. Canadians, however, still see the original name 'Lake Ontario', and users elsewhere may see both names.
Reactions from governments have been mixed. While New York Governor Kathy Hochul said her state won't use the new name, Vermont Governor Phil Scott called Trump's move 'petty and disappointing'.
